Time Passes

My, how time flashes by.  It doesn’t seem like a month, but it has been.  Well, lets see what’s been happening and what’s new…

I have a very kind gentleman who mows my yard for me when he mows the church’s yard (the Baptist Church is my neighbor).  And I’ve been very happy with him until this last time he mowed.  I know he thought he was being helpful, but he mowed down my mint and weed whacked my trumpet vine.  Sigh!  Oh well.  (I did notice, today when I was watering, that it looks like it’s starting to grow again.  I need to get some sort of barrier so they don’t get knocked down – again.)  He isn’t charging me, so I can’t complain too much, but I will ask that he not mow by the front of the house any more.

As for my other plants, my sister swiped my watermelon plant.  Well, actually Mom said to give it to her.  Out numbered, what can you do?  Never got around to planting my corn, but I do have marigolds and a new mint plant (planted in a barrel so it won’t get knocked down).  All of my tomato plants have flowers and tomatoes on them, I’m so excited!  My rosemary is growing great and the heat finally got to my columbines and bleeding hearts.  I keep watering them so they’ll be back come next spring.

The rains have finally stopped.  Well, they stopped almost a month ago, and it’s been in the 90s and 100s almost every day since.  Now we are back to Red Flag Warnings when the wind starts blowing.  (Red Flag Warnings, for those who don’t know, are warnings that wildfires could be possible, the conditions are right for them to occur.)

We had our bi-annual (every two years) Family Reunion.  It was so great to see everyone.  Some I haven’t seen in 4 or 5 years and some I haven’t seen in 10 years or more.  Mom was so happy at the turn out.  I was so glad for her.

Well, I think that’s about it for now.  It’s hot outside, I’m inside with both air conditioners running and a cold drink where I can reach it.  Meow-Yen Kitty is curled up under the desk, watching me closely.  She’s “in time out” right now.  She figured out how to open the screen door this morning.  Not a fun thing to do at 6 in the morning, chasing her back into the house.  I guess I just have to learn to deal with a scary smart kitty.

Have a good rest of the week, all.

Its Soap Box Time!

New chair nap

As many of you know, I have a cat and I adore her.  She makes me crazy some days and other days, she is my bestest buddy ever.  Especially lately.  And as many of you know, I’ve been going through some medical stuff that has me a bit concerned.  (Although I have been told repeatedly not to be, by several people.)  And lately, my sweet faced Meow-Yen Kitty has been surprisingly cuddly.  Which she’s not.  And I’m loving every minute of it.  So here’s where my soap box comes in.  And I will try to be concise.

I love animals, and little kids.  Two of the most loving and innocent of God’s creatures.  I hate that people use and abuse both of them, but today I’m focusing on animal abuse in its oh so many forms.  The point is, why can’t people just be kind.  To animals and kids?  What kind of society do we live in where it’s okay to abuse animals and small children?  You don’t have to like animals.  I know several people who don’t, but they also don’t hurt the furry critters.

I was reading about some police in Detroit who shot a woman’s dog 14 times, because it barked at them.  Really?  Seriously?  Come on people.  Dogs Bark.  Get over it.  And especially the police.  And they weren’t even punished in any way, shape or form.  Not even for discharging their fire arms in the city.

Then there’s the guys in Denver, a few years ago, who thought it would be so funny to light a kitten on fire and watch it run around.  Poor kitten.  Fortunately, the kitten was rescued and after many months of medical care, she was adopted by a family that already had a cat.  Last I heard she is doing fine.  The guys who did this, though just got their wrist slapped and a fine of $75 each (I think).

Do people not realize that those who abuse animals have a 80% chance of going on to abuse people?  It makes my blood boil.  I have rescued kitties myself, and the worse two were the female cat, who was pregnant, whose owner was beating her with a broom because she was always hiding from people.  Well, duh.  I had her for three years and she turned into such a sweet thing, before I had to put her to sleep.

The other rescue was my boy, China Blue.

I found him and his litter mates floating down a small canal in a paper bag.  There were five kittens all together, none of them had their eyes open.  Two were already dead, a third one died on the way to the vet and the fourth one the vet had to euthanize.  Then there was China Blue.  The vet advised against trying to hand raise him (they seem to do that a lot) and warned me he might not make it.  But, I can be very stubborn at times.  I had very understanding employers at the time and they let me rig up a sling to carry him around with me while I was at work.  I had China Blue for close to 16 years and I still miss him.

It is now a felony for people to abuse animals.  About Bloody Time.  At least it is here in Colorado.  Can’t remember if it’s nation wide.  I hope so.  Its just so sad that people have to be such stupid bullies.

My Other Soap Box

Those of you who know me know that of all of God’s creatures, my favorite is the cat.  I love those furry little critters.  I could spend all day playing with my own little furball, Meow-Yen Kitty.

And I take as good care of her as I can.  (Yes, I do have a problem with litter boxes, that’s why she has 2 or 3 at a time.)  She has been fixed and has had all her shots and she is NEVER going outside, until I can buy, or make, a catio for her.  (An enclosed area outside of a window that allows her to go out and come in when she wants, but keeps her from wandering.)  But there is one thing I will never, ever do, and I wish this particular “treatment” would be banned.  I will never declaw her.

Declawing is, to my mind, a form of torture.  I am very unapologetic about this – people who declaw their cats should be arrested for animal abuse and never allowed a pet – of any kind – ever again.

Most people declaw their cats for the most stupid of reasons.  They don’t want their “stuff” scratched.  Buy a scratching post.  Put double sided tape where you don’t want them to scratch, use moth balls, orange scented furniture polish or even orange peels themselves, but don’t declaw the kitty.

Here’s why – declawing doesn’t just remove the claws, which is the cats defensive tools, it takes off the first knuckle of the cat’s foot.  I used to tell people it was like cutting off your fingers at the first joint, but a better analogy is to think of a ballerina.  How would she function if all her toes were cut off at the first joint.  How would you walk if all your toes were cut off at the first knuckle?

Its cruel and inhumane.  Unfortunately, it’s all too human.  Selfish, immature, thoughtlessly human.

So, I’m having a hard time climbing down from this soap box because I just don’t understand how anyone could mistreat those adorable kitties out there.  Which would, if I let it, take me to another soap box, but one’s enough for now.  PLEASE, for the kitties, don’t declaw.

(For a much less angry view point, please watch The Paw Project at .  It’s not gory, it just presents the facts and the results of declawing.)
